Like his wife Ladina, Dario Caviezel narrowly misses out on World Championship bronze
Keystone
An unlucky start for the Swiss alpine snowboarders at their home World Championships in the Engadine: both Dario Caviezel and his wife Ladina missed out on a medal in the parallel giant slalom.
Dario Caviezel made a mistake in the small final and was eliminated after being narrowly beaten in the semi-final by eventual world champion Roland Fischnaller from Italy. Ladina Caviezel lost out to Aleksandra Krol-Walas from Poland in the heat for third place. In the semi-final, the Swiss athlete was beaten by the superior Ester Ledecka.
Ledecka lived up to her role as favorite. The Czech, who was already clearly on top in qualifying, beat Japan's Tsubaki Miki in the final and secured World Championship gold in the giant slalom for the second time since 2017. In 2018, she won Olympic gold in both alpine skiing (super-G) and snowboarding (parallel giant slalom). It was Fischnaller's second World Championship title. In 2015, he won gold in the parallel slalom in Lachtal, Austria. Silver went to Stefan Baumeister from Germany and bronze to Sangho Lee from South Korea.
Switzerland's greatest hope in the women's event, Julie Zogg, had to pull out in the quarter-finals. Unlike Caviezel, she did not have the luck of a hundredth on her side and was beaten by Krol-Walas by a tiny margin of five hundredths. A disappointment for the two-time world champion in the parallel slalom, who had set the third-best time in qualifying.
For Flurina Bätschi, the round of 16 was already the end of the line. The 21-year-old Swiss lost to the 30 (!) year older Austrian Claudia Riegler.
