One day after Noemi Rüegg took the red leader's jersey at the start of the women's Vuelta, the Tour of Spain comes to an abrupt end for the Zurich rider. Rüegg crashed 13 km before the finish and had to abandon.
Rüegg hit the rear wheel of a teammate and also knocked down the Italian Eleonora Ciabocco in her crash. Rüegg tried to continue the race, but gave up shortly afterwards. It is not yet clear what injuries the 25-year-old sustained.
After Rüegg's retirement, the leader's jersey was taken by the German Franziska Koch, who finished second behind the Belgian stage winner Shari Bossuyt.
