The first stage of the women's tour after a 20-year absence, which led over 156 kilometers from Genoa to Sanremo, went to Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes.

Wiebes won the sprint in a group of twelve ahead of her compatriot Marianne Vos and the in-form Rüegg. The latter had won the Tour Down Under in January.
