After finishing third last year, 25-year-old Swiss rider Noemi Rüegg finished the women's race from Milan to San Remo in second place. In the final sprint, Rüegg was only beaten by Lotte Kopecky.

Rüegg finished just a few centimeters behind the Belgian Kopecky after 156 km. The Swiss rider's disappointment was clear to see as she crossed the finish line. Rüegg has already won the Tour Down Under this season. With her qualities in climbing and finishing, the profile of the race is tailor-made for Rüegg.

The preliminary decision was made on the climb to Poggio San Remo shortly before the end. A group of five was able to break away, saved the small lead to the finish and decided the victory among themselves.

Lotte Kopecky triumphed for the first time in San Remo. However, the two-time world champion has already won the Tour of Flanders three times.
