Led by five athletics aces who won medals at the European Championships in Apeldoorn a week and a half ago, the twelve-strong Swiss delegation is now aiming to make a clean sweep at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing.
The starting position looks promising from Friday. A septet of athletes are in the top 8 of the entry list for their disciplines: Ditaji Kambundji is first in the 60 m hurdles, and the trio of Mujinga Kambundji (60 m), Angelica Moser (pole) and Annik Kälin (long) are even in the top 3. But Simon Ehammer, who is number 4 on the entry list in the long jump, is also among the medal candidates. The man from Appenzell will not be defending his title in the heptathlon.
Hurdles sprinter Jason Joseph and 800m runner Audrey Werro, who missed out on a possible medal in Apeldoorn by falling, also have the potential for a coup.
The World Indoor Championships in Nanjing were originally scheduled for 2020 and then 2023, but could not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, the European and World Championships in 2025 will be two indoor title fights on the program. At the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, the Swiss haul consisted solely of the heptathlon gold medal won by Ehammer.
