Oliver Heer is the third Swiss to finish the Vendée Globe. The man from Rapperswil-Jona returned to the port of departure in Les Sables-d'Olonne after 99 days of sailing around the world.
Heer, who had no ambitions of achieving a top ranking with his type of boat, covered over 24,000 nautical miles in his yacht "Tut gut" on the trip around the Antarctic. The 36-year-old skipper came 29th out of the 40 competitors.
Heer mastered several tricky situations that could have meant the end of the race. For example, he had to mend the main sail or repair a flooded emergency engine (to be able to come to the aid of a person at sea).
The winner Charlie Dalin from France was back after 64 days, Justine Mettraux after 76 (8th place) and Alan Roura after 84 (18th place)
