At the WTA 1000 Tournament in Toronto, the American Jessica Pegula (WTA 6) retains the upper hand against her compatriot Amanda Anisimova (WTA 49). The world number 6 won 6:3, 2:6, 6:1.
Pegula thus repeated her triumph at the tournament, which she had already won in Montreal last season. Montreal and Toronto alternate every year as the venues for the women's and men's tournaments.
"It wasn't easy to switch from the clay court in Roland Garros to the other surface here, but I managed it," said Pegula, alluding to the Olympic Games in Paris. There, the 30-year-old had beaten Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in the opening round, but was defeated by Yelina Svitolina of Ukraine in the next round.
The 22-year-old final loser Anisimova can take comfort in the fact that she has made a big leap in the world rankings from 132nd to 49th since her arrival in Canada.
