The Vancouver Canucks secure an important bonus point in the direct duel at the playoff line with a 4-3 penalty shootout win against the Calgary Flames. Pius Suter scores a goal.
The Canucks won the penalty shootout, although Pius Suter did not score. Suter could have ended the game with his attempt, but was denied by Calgary goalie Dustin Wolf. Suter had scored earlier: in the 14th minute, he gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead, tucking in the follow-up shot from just under ten meters out after his own attempt.
It was Suter's 17th goal of the season - even though the Zurich native has only been on the 4th line (Tuesday) and 3rd line (against Calgary on Wednesday). 17 goals in a season is a record for Pius Suter in the NHL - even though he still has 18 games to go. He had previously scored 15 goals in his second year in the NHL (2021-22) for the Detroit Red Wings, finishing all other seasons with 14 goals.
The Canucks trailed 2:3 until the 54th minute. Elias Pettersson then equalized. For the first time all season, Vancouver won a game in which it trailed after two periods. The fact that it did so against Calgary, of all teams, is significant. The Flames currently occupy the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Four teams - Calgary, Vancouver (71 points each), Utah and St. Louis (69 each) - are battling it out for that final spot.
