The Dutch world champion in the Red Bull - victorious for the third time in a row in last year's race on Notre Dame Island - lost 0.160 seconds to the 27-year-old Russell, who managed a fabulous lap in the decisive part of qualifying.

World championship leader Oscar Piastri (0.221 back), who has already started from the best grid position four times this year, finished third in Montreal. Andrea Kimi Antonelli will start the race alongside the Australian in the second Mercedes (start at 20.00 Swiss time).

Piastri's McLaren team-mate Lando Norris had to make do with grid position 7 for the tenth of 24 races this season.

Of the Sauber driver duo, Nico Hülkenberg advanced to the second part of qualifying. The German, who finished a surprising fifth in the Spanish GP two weeks ago, will start from 12th on the grid thanks to Yuki Tsunoda's retirement. Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto also benefited from the penalty against the Japanese driver and secured 15th position on the grid.
