Ponti had impressed in the preliminary heat in the morning with the second-best time of all participants. In his second appearance in the Olympic pool in Paris, the 23-year-old improved once again. In 1:54.14, he beat his Swiss record, which he set in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, by six hundredths.

Only world record holder Kristof Milak from Hungary (1:52.72), France's Léon Marchand (1:53.50) and Canada's Ilya Kharun (1:54.01) were faster than Ponti in the semi-finals.

The final will take place on Wednesday evening at 20:35. It will be Ponti's second individual final at the Summer Games, after he sensationally won Olympic bronze in Tokyo three years ago in his showpiece discipline, the 100m dolphin.
