Portugal are already through to the last 16 of the European Championship after the second matchday. The efficient Iberians won 3:0 against Turkey in Dortmund.
As in the first group game against Georgia, the stadium in Dortmund was a Turkish cauldron. However, the Portuguese double strike before the end of the first half hour silenced the fanatical fans.
The Portuguese played extremely cool in the heated atmosphere. Bernardo Silva put his team ahead with the first chance after 21 minutes. After a fine attack down the left, the 29-year-old from Manchester City took a low, deflected cross from ten meters out and slotted the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal. Just seven minutes later, the Turks pulled the plug on themselves. After a misunderstanding between central defender Samet Akaydin and goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, the ball ended up in his own net.
To the Turks' credit, they did not let this setback get them down. They put in a great deal of effort throughout the game, but rarely entered the dangerous zone. On the other hand, the Portuguese, who had a much stronger squad in terms of quality, controlled the game with aplomb and increased their lead to 3:0 after 56 minutes through Bruno Fernandes. The Iberians have never won more at a European Championship.
The Portuguese are therefore group winners ahead of time and have reached the knockout round of a European Championship for the eighth time in a row. The Turks still have a good chance of qualifying for the round of 16 for the first time since 2008. A draw against the Czech Republic in their final group game will be enough to secure second place.
