Sandro Hauswirth flies to a career-best result at the New Year's ski jumping event in the shadow of the day's winner and dominator Domen Prevc. Gregor Deschwanden also impresses.
Hauswirth landed in the top 20 for the first time in his career in 18th place after flights of 127.5 and 132 m. The 25-year-old from the Bernese Oberland was late to the game. He only made it into the World Cup points for the first time this season. And he did so in the last five competitions in a row.
Gregor Deschwanden did even better than Hauswirth in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, clenching his fist after both flights (132 m/134 m). The Lucerne native, twice a spectator in the final round in Engelberg, is gradually regaining his old strength. He didn't come close to last year's second place, but 10th place will give him a boost. After 22nd place in Oberstdorf, the man from Horw can now also aim for the top ten in the overall ranking of the Four Hills Tournament.
While Hauswirth is growing with the task, the tour is over for Simon Ammann and Juri Kesseli. The man from Toggenburg and the man from Lucerne had to make do with 34th and 45th place respectively. The two were unable to use the competitions in Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen to wrap up their Olympic qualification. And there is hardly any opportunity to find their missing form during the tour. Felix Trunz and Killian Peier will now have the chance to fight for an Olympic ticket in Innsbruck.
Domen Prevc once again flew in a league of his own (143 m/141 m) and outclassed the competition as he did in Oberstdorf. The Austrians Jan Hörl and Stephan Embacher on the other podium places were around 16 points behind, which equates to 9 meters.
