The GCK Lions continue to make life difficult for qualification winners Basel. After two extremely close defeats, the underdogs from Zurich won their third quarter-final game away from home 3:2 after overtime and reduced the deficit in the best-of-7 series to 1:2.
Victor Backman scored the winning goal for the visitors in the 17th minute of the second overtime period. The Swede converted a penalty that was whistled after a clear foul by Basel defender Patrick Zubler on Finnish two-goal scorer Jarno Kärki. Basel equalized the score at 2:2 only 69 seconds before the end of regulation time, when the home team put everything on one card with six forwards on the ice.
Defending champions La Chaux-de-Fonds suffered their next setback in their clash with Olten. After the 6-0 away defeat on Friday, the team from Neuchâtel were beaten 3-2 after overtime in front of their home crowd. Meanwhile, Visp, the other promotion contender alongside La Chaux-de-Fonds, managed to get back on track with a 6-2 home win against cantonal rivals Sierre.
The only team still unbeaten in these playoffs is Thurgau, who can secure their progression with a fourth win in the Grisons capital on Tuesday after a 3:1 home win against promoted Chur.
