The European Championship match between Italy and Spain turned into a horror for Roberto Baggio. The former world footballer had to go to hospital with head injuries after being attacked at his home in northern Italy.
According to Italian media reports, five armed men broke into the Baggios' villa near Vicenza on Thursday evening while the 57-year-old was watching the European Championship match between Italy and Spain (0:1) on television with his family. One of the perpetrators is said to have hit Baggio with a rifle butt and injured him in the head.
According to an initial reconstruction, the former star striker tried to defend himself and was injured in the scuffle. According to the reports, the wound to his head required several stitches. Baggio spoke out via his manager on Friday morning: "Anything can happen when things like this happen. And fortunately, the violence I suffered only caused me stitches, bruises and a lot of fear." Now he has to get over the shock, the Ansa news agency quoted him as saying.
Baggio and his family were reportedly locked in a room. The perpetrators then ransacked the house and stole watches, jewelry and money. After the criminals had left the villa, Baggio reportedly broke down the door and alerted the Carabinieri. Apart from the 56-time international and 1994 World Cup runner-up, nobody else was injured during the robbery.
