As expected, Primoz Roglic takes the lead in the overall classification in the 19th and third-last stage of the Vuelta and is on the verge of his fourth triumph in the Tour of Spain.
Primoz Roglic was superbly staged by his team and pulled away irresistibly on the steep final climb to Alto de Moncalvillo. In the end, the Slovenian triumphed solo and by 46 seconds ahead of the Frenchman David Gaudu. Roglic thus took over the red leader's jersey from Australian Ben O'Connor.
O'Connor had bravely defended his lead twelve times since his victory in stage 6, but now it was clear that the five-second lead was clearly not enough. In twelfth place, the Australian from Team Decathlon AG2R lost 1:49 minutes on Roglic, but still defended second place. He is now 1:54 behind Roglic, with the Spaniard Enric Mas in third 2:20 behind.
Roglic, on the other hand, is unlikely to lose his fourth overall victory in the Vuelta after 2019 to 2021. The queen stage is on the program on Saturday, followed by a 24.6 km time trial on Sunday, a specialty of the 2021 Olympic time trial champion. Overall, the leader of the German team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe triumphed for the 15th time in a stage of the Vuelta.
