Roman Josi has another big performance in the NHL. The Bern native contributed a goal and two assists to the Nashville Predators' 3-2 home win against the Washington Capitals.
The last game in which Josi had a similarly strong personal record was some time ago. In mid-April of the year before last, the captain of the team from Tennessee even recorded two goals and two assists in a 6-4 win at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Four scoring points - a feat that Josi had already achieved for the eighth time in the NHL at the time.
Against the Capitals, the 35-year-old Josi made his first appearance as an assist man on the equalizer to tie the game at 1-1, which was scored by the same-aged Canadian Steven Stamkos, now the Predators' leading scorer in this championship with 19 goals, in the first period on the power play. Alex Ovechkin had also put the visitors ahead in overtime. The 40-year-old Russian thus reached the mark of at least 20 goals in a regular season for the 21st time. Only the legendary Canadian Gordie Howe, who passed away nine and a half years ago, is better in this statistic.
Josi was also at the origin of the 2:1 at the start of the third period by the American Cole Smith. A good two minutes later, he made it 3:1 with his goal, again on the power play. Following their latest success, the Predators are now just two points away from a place in the Western Conference standings that would entitle them to participate in the playoffs.
Niederreiter with prestigious win
Nino Niederreiter scored a prestigious win. The Winnipeg Jets with the Grisons native defeated the New Jersey Devils with their Swiss trio 4:3 at home.
Two days earlier, the Jets with Niederreiter had beaten the Los Angeles Kings with Kevin Fiala 5:1 and thus stopped the inglorious streak of eleven defeats, now the Chur forward also won the first comparison of the current season against Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler.
Niederreiter was one of the players who set up the 1-0 goal by the American Alex Iafallo just over a minute before the end of the first period. The Devils responded promptly. 37 seconds later, captain Hischier equalized with goal number 13 in this championship. With 33 scoring points, the Valais native is still the most successful Swiss player in this regular season.
The Devils went ahead twice more in the second period, but had to concede the equalizer each time. The decision in favor of the Jets was made by Canadian Tanner Pearson after six minutes in the third period. The second win in a row for Winnipeg did little to change their position in the standings. Niederreiter and his teammates remain in second-to-last place in the league standings. The Devils' deficit to a playoff spot remains six points after their fourth loss in a row.
Czech Hertl with five points
Tomas Hertl also made a special appearance on Monday night in the Vegas Golden Knights' 7-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. The Czech scored twice and had three assists, making it the first time he has scored five points in an NHL game. Akira Schmid was the backup goaltender for the Golden Knights, while Philipp Kurashev is still missing for the Sharks due to injury.
