Roman Mityukov misses out on a medal in the 200 m backstroke at the long course world championships in Singapore. The man from Geneva missed the Swiss record by 7 tenths and finished seventh. He had hoped for and expected more.

Gold went to the Olympic champion Hubert Kos (1:53.19). The Hungarian was just as far out of reach for the Swiss as the South African Pieter Coetze (1:53.36). But bronze from Yohann Ndoye-Brouard from France (1:54.62) would have been possible. For this podium finish, Mityukov would have had to lower his record from Thursday (1:54.83) by another two tenths.

The Swiss initially seemed to be on course and was stopped in fifth place at the turnaround, then sixth. In the second half of the race, the 25-year-old was unable to show off his stamina and finishing speed as usual. On the contrary: he even lost a few positions.

Mityukov would have won a World Championship medal for the third time. The bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics took bronze in Fukuoka in 2023 and silver in Doha a year ago. But August 1 did not bring him any luck. For the man from Geneva, this date is not only linked to the national holiday, but also to his bronze medal at the Olympic Games.
