Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy wins the three-hole play-off at the Players Championships in Sawgrass, Florida, on Monday. The play-off against American J.J. Spaun was undramatic.
On Sunday, Rory McIlroy secured his place in the play-off with a successful putt from just over a meter away. J.J. Spaun could have secured victory with a putt from around ten meters, but his ball didn't quite make it to the hole.
The play-off, which was postponed to Monday after a four-hour wait, was unexciting. McIlroy made a birdie on the 16th hole thanks to a long tee shot. On the legendary 17th hole at Sawgrass - with the green surrounded by water on a lake - McIlroy hit the green, while Spaun's ball landed in the water. Spaun lost two more shots, meaning the play-off was more than decided.
Rory McIlroy won the Players Championships for the second time in his career. For the first time, the 35-year-old Northern Irishman celebrated two tournament victories before the Masters, the first major tournament of the season. McIlroy won 4.5 million dollars of the 25 million total prize money. The Players Championships are the most important golf tournament below the majors. No other tournament offers more prize money.
