Rychenberg Winterthur has won the floorball cup for the first time in 29 years. The Zurich team defeated champions and defending champions Zug in the cup final in Bern by a surprisingly clear 7:2.
No player has scored more points in this year's floorball season than Albin Sjögren. The Swede, who is in his second season in Zug, currently has 68 points after 21 games and 19 goals. The next-highest scorer, his teammate Sami Johansson, has 16 points less to his name.
In this respect, Zug's hopes for a successful defense of the Cup title were already resting primarily on the shoulders of the 30-year-old, who is one of the best players the sport of floorball has to offer.
However, when Sjögren got on the scoresheet for the first time in the atmospheric Wankdorfhalle in Bern, where over 2000 fans were cheering him on, his team was still trailing 1:5. It could have been the moment of a spectacular comeback at the start of the third period. After all, no other team has as much offensive power as Zug. And in almost a third of the game, their seemingly comfortable lead had already melted faster than the remaining piles of snow in the spring sunshine.
But the team from Winterthur never ran the risk of letting the game slip out of their hands on this Saturday evening. They were too disciplined in defense, too self-sacrificing in their shots even with the comfortable lead behind them. Every save by Nicolas Schüpbach in the Zurich goal was cheered frenetically by the vociferous fans in yellow.
Rychenberg Winterthur, who had lost 5:9 to the same opponents last year, laid the foundation for victory in the second period when Nico Mutter, Nils Conrad and Claudio Mutter increased the lead to 4:0 within seven minutes. When top scorer Manuel Maurer scored the fifth goal just ten seconds into the third period, any hopes Zug had of catching up were nipped in the bud early on.
For Rychenberg Winterthur, the fifth Cup victory in the club's history marks the end of a long wait. The last time the Zurich team triumphed in this competition was in 1996.
