The seven sawdust rings for the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival (ESAF) at the end of August were piled up on Monday. The 37 tons of material were flown in by helicopter - so that the perfect lawn would not be destroyed.

Three flight phases were necessary to bring the 37 tons of sawdust packed in big bags to the Glarnerland Arena. There was a good reason why the helicopter was used instead of the usual trucks.

The grass in the wrestling arena is the heart of the mega-event. It was planted months in advance, "nurtured and cared for", as an ESAF spokeswoman said when asked by Keystone-SDA. Since it was sown last fall, it has been strictly forbidden to enter. If lorries were to drive onto it now, there would be tracks "that could no longer be eradicated".

In addition, transportation by helicopter to the airfield where the ESAF takes place is cheaper and more efficient. After the federal event, the locally produced sawdust will be processed into chipboard and pellets, the spokesperson emphasized.
