After missing out on the play-offs, SC Bern is undergoing a radical change. Among other things, the club is planning to do without captain Ramon Untersander and is making a change in the coaching position.
"We clearly missed our targets last season and are aware that corrections are necessary. We have now made the first changes - more will follow," explains SCB Sporting Director Martin Plüss in a press release.
One important change concerns the coaching position. As the SCB announced, the cooperation with head coach Heinz Ehlers will not be extended. His successor will be announced by mid-May at the latest. In addition to Patrick Schöb, who still has a current contract, Pavel Rosa will remain on the coaching staff for another two years as assistant coach.
There will be a major shake-up in defense. Ramon Untersander, who has served as captain for the past two seasons, Joël Vermin and the Swede Hardy Häman Aktell will have to leave the club despite their current contracts. According to the SCB, they are currently looking for an amicable solution with the players.
Ian Mitchell is the latest Canadian defenseman to join the team. The 27-year-old moves from the Tampa Bay Lightning's NHL organization to the SCB for two seasons. Mitchell is the fifth new addition for the upcoming season after defenseman Davyd Barandun and forwards Dario Rohrbach, Paul Mottard and Joel Grossniklaus.
In addition, the cooperation with forward Emil Bemström, defenseman Samuel Kreis and goalie Sandro Zurkirchen will be extended. In addition to Zurkirchen and Christof von Burg, the SCB is expected to sign another goaltender for the 2026-27 season.
