Fabienne Schlumpf adds another top result to her track record: the 33-year-old from Zurich is the best European in the New York Marathon, finishing in an outstanding 5th place.
In 2:26:31 hours, Schlumpf improved her Swiss record in an all-women's race (previously 2:30:17 at the 2022 European Championships in Munich).
She had said before the race that she felt in very good shape, and this feeling did not deceive her. She ran in the leading group until after the 30th kilometer and even led the field at times. When the group fell apart, she behaved skillfully and managed her strength perfectly, reaching the finish line in Central Park in fifth place behind four African runners.
After finishing 16th in the Olympic marathon in Paris in August, Schlumpf can now celebrate a brilliant performance on the world stage for the second time in just under three months.
The Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui secured victory in 2:24:35 hours, while the Dutchman Abdi Nageeye won the men's race in 2:07:39.
