The Swiss road team is off to a great start in the new year, both for the men and the women. The latest coup: Mauro Schmid wins the Great Ocean Race in Australia.
Schmid, who rides in the colors of the Australian team Jayco AlUla, won by three seconds ahead of the second-placed Australian Aaron Gate. The 25-year-old Swiss rider pulled away from his rivals in the final phase of the 183.8 km race near Melbourne. The Swiss champion used a descent to shake off the other eight riders in the leading group.
The rider from Zurich took his first victory since his success in the overall standings of the Tour of Slovakia last June.
