One day after the disappointing start to the qualifying round with a clear defeat against the French on the Orient Express Racing boat, the team of Swiss skipper Arnaud Psarofaghis once again failed to get up to speed as hoped.
After an unsuccessful start, before which the boat sank into the water from the foils, which make it possible to float over the waves, the gap to the Americans grew steadily; Team Alinghi Red Bull passed the first section around a minute behind its opponent.
Even after that, little went right for the Swiss. Once again, the yacht slipped off the foils in light winds, was traveling at a correspondingly low speed and even came to a standstill at times. The Swiss finished 2 minutes and 58 seconds behind in the duel, which was shortened due to the poor weather conditions.
In the preliminary round of the Louis Vuitton Cup with two round robins, everyone sails twice against everyone else for the time being. Four of the five challengers will reach the semi-finals. On Saturday, the Swiss boat will duel with its British opponent Ineos Britannia and should also have competed against Team New Zealand.
However, following the accident on Thursday in which their yacht was damaged when it was lifted out of the water, the New Zealanders will have to forgo the preliminary round for the time being. As title holders, they do not have to qualify for the final America's Cup competitions anyway.
