There were no changes at the front of the overall standings - apart from the retirement of sixth-placed Primoz Roglic. Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel (1:06 minutes back) and Jonas Vingegaard (1:14) will battle it out in two difficult stages in the Pyrenees on Saturday. Pogacar lost a valuable helper. The Spaniard Juan Ayuso had to leave the Tour on Friday due to illness.

On the flat stage towards Pau, numerous breakaway groups formed thanks to the wind edges. They were always caught. This led to a hectic finale including a crash at the front of the peloton. However, none of the contenders for the overall classification had to go down. Philipsen won ahead of the Belgian Wout Van Aert, who finished second for the second time in a row, and the German Pascal Ackermann.

This weekend should show whether last year's winner Vingegaard is actually capable of turning the tide. The first of two tough climbs on Saturday features two top-class climbs, including the ascent of the Tour classic Col du Tourmalet. The 14th stage ends with the first mountain finish of the Tour with the climb to Pla d'Adet.
