Jhonatan Narvaez doubles up at the Giro d'Italia. The Ecuadorian also wins stage 8 after stage 4. While Afonso Eulalio remains in the leader's jersey, Fabio Christen has to abandon after a crash.
Narvaez proved to be the strongest of a three-man breakaway group over the 156 km between Chieti and Fermo on Saturday. The puncher from Team UAE Emirates won by around 30 seconds ahead of the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund. Together with Narvaez's teammate Mikkel Bjerg, the two had broken away from the field more than 70 km before the finish.
Narvaez played to his strengths in the demanding finale with several short but steep climbs. With 10.5 km to go, he launched the decisive attack and rode to his 17th professional victory in total, his fourth at the Giro, thus drawing level with his compatriot Richard Carapaz.
Eulalio still in pink
Top favorite Jonas Vingegaard made up two seconds on leader Afonso Eulalio in the final sprint the day after his victory at the Blockhaus. However, the Portuguese rider still has a 3:15 minute lead over the Dane in the overall standings.
After the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, Vingegaard also wants to win the third grand tour at the Giro. Only seven riders have managed this. On Sunday, Vingegaard has the chance to get closer to the leader's pink jersey at the next mountain finish.
Fabio Christen out after crash
In the Swiss camp, the stage through Abruzzo and Marche was marked by the withdrawal of Fabio Christen from Aargau. The rider from the Swiss team Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team crashed at the start of the stage and had to abandon the tour.
His brother Jan Christen, a teammate of Narvaez at UAE Emirates, reached the finish in a larger chasing group and thus improved by four positions in the overall classification. He is now the best Swiss rider in 19th place, just under seven minutes behind.
