Alec Segaert wins the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia with a late attack. His team-mate Afonso Eulalio defends the maglia rosa.
The 175-kilometre stage from Imperia to Novi Ligure initially seemed to be a sprinter's race. Although there were two third-category climbs on the program, these were well before the finish. However, thanks in part to Team Movistar's pace work, the peloton was torn apart in the mountains, with several strong sprinters losing touch and unable to return to the front in the final 50 kilometers.
The time trial specialist Segaert took full advantage of this. The 23-year-old Belgian attacked with just under three kilometers to go and confidently brought his lead to the finish.
The day went perfectly for Bahrain Victorious: Segaert's team-mate Afonso Eulalio successfully defended his lead in the overall standings. The Portuguese rider secured an additional six bonus seconds at the last intermediate sprint and is now 33 seconds ahead of second-placed Dane Jonas Vingegaard.
The best Swiss rider was Jan Christen (59th), who finished at the end of the first chasing pack.
