Valtteri Filppula, one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time, is ending his career. The former Geneva champion forward made the announcement on the website of his favorite club, Jokerit Helsinki.
Valtteri Filppula is the only Finn in the so-called "Triple Gold Club", which includes players who have won the Olympics, World Championship and Stanley Cup at least once in their career.
The long-time NHL forward also left his mark in Switzerland, more specifically in Geneva. In the 2022-23 season, the center was an important component on the way to Servette's first championship title in the club's history. One year later, Filppula celebrated winning the Champions Hockey League with Geneva.
He then left the National League club and spent another season with his youth club Jokerit Helsinki, with whom he became champion in the second-highest league, but recently missed out on the desired promotion in the "league qualification". After leaving the KHL as a result of the war in Ukraine, Jokerit only returned to the Finnish league system for the season before last.
Filppula is still uncertain about his future plans. "Now it's time to rest and think about the future," the exceptional player is quoted as saying on Jokerit's website.
