Nine Swiss players will be involved in qualifying for the Australian Open from Monday.
Among them is Viktorija Golubic (WTA 90), who won two titles in the fall, but previously did not score enough points to enter the main draw of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Golubic reached the round of 16 in Melbourne a year ago. The number 2 seed from Zurich can lose just as many points. In the event of premature failure, she could slip to 110th place in the world rankings. In the first round of qualifying, the 32-year-old will face Ukraine's Anastasija Soboljewa (WTA 216).
Six other Swiss women will be fighting to qualify for the main draw. Susan Bandecchi will face the Russian Polina Kudermetova, Rebeka Masarova the Spaniard Irene Burillo Escorihuela. Simona Waltert will be up against Barbora Palicova from the Czech Republic, Jil Teichmann against Shi Han from China, Céline Naef against Nina Stojanovic from Serbia and Léonie Küng against Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania.
Only Jérôme Kym and Marc-Andrea Hüsler are in action in the men's singles. The number 27 seed from Aargau will play Tim van Rijthoven from the Netherlands and the Zurich player will face Valentin Vacherot from Monaco.
