Mikaela Shiffrin is well on her way to her 98th World Cup victory at the season opener in Sölden. The American leads the giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier after the first run.

Under the eyes of her injured partner Aleksander Kilde, Shiffrin with bib number 1 built up a 22 hundredths lead over Alice Robinson from New Zealand. Italian Federica Brignone is in third place after half the race, four tenths of a second behind.

In the absence of Lara Gut-Behrami, the Swiss were unable to keep up with the fastest skiers. The best was Michelle Gisin, who finished three positions ahead of Camille Rast in 13th place. Wendy Holdener lost 3.7 seconds in her first race since December 2023 and just made it into the second run in 29th place, as did Simone Wild, who was one place ahead of her.

Gut-Behrami decided not to start after the run-in. She was not 100 percent fit and the risk of injury was too great, explained the overall World Cup winner from last season, who had been affected by flu and knee problems during her recent preparations, tearfully.

The second run starts at 13:00.
