Heptathlete Simon Ehammer is on course for a Swiss record at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, but not for gold.
The man from Appenzell goes into the final 1000 m race on Saturday evening with a lead of just 50 points.
The signs point to a victory for Sander Skotheim, who has held the European record since January with 6484 points. The Norwegian is clearly the faster 1000 m runner than Ehammer. If you take the best times as a yardstick, he can take 142 points off the Swiss in the final discipline. A year ago in Glasgow, when Ehammer became world indoor champion, Skotheim almost caught him. This time he is unlikely to miss the chance.
Ehammer once again took the lead in the intermediate rankings on the second day with a time of 7.68 seconds in the hurdles sprint. The pole vault ended in a draw, with both athletes clearing 5.10 meters. The Swiss showed two good performances. To put Skotheim under pressure for the 1000 m race, however, he would have needed an exploit - as he did on the first day in the long jump and shot put.
Ehammer will in all likelihood slightly improve on last year's Swiss record (6418 points), but will fall short of his two ambitious goals of gold and the European record.
