World number one Jannik Sinner has stopped the winning streak of American tennis pro Ben Shelton at Wimbledon. The 22-year-old Italian won 6:2, 6:4, 7:6 (11:9) in the round of 16 in London and thus followed the Spanish defending champion Carlos Alcaraz into the quarter-finals.

Sinner showed his full repertoire of strokes in his victory against Shelton. In the third set, he responded to a perfect return from Shelton with a tweener stopball and then followed it up with a passing ball winner.

In the on-court interview after the match, Sinner said that the shot was "just luck".

Sinner will now face former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev in the battle to reach the round of the best eight. The Russian top player benefited from Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov retiring due to injury at 5:3 in the first set.

In the semi-finals, Sinner could face an exciting encounter with Alcaraz. Shelton reached the Wimbledon round of 16 30 years after his father and coach Bryan Shelton.
