The Swiss miss out on an exploit in the night slalom in Madonna di Campiglio. Tanguy Nef, second after the first run, had to settle for 10th place, with Loïc Meillard right behind him.
After the first run, Nef had been dreaming of his first podium place in the World Cup, even victory. Only the surprising Finn Eduard Hallberg was ahead of the 29-year-old from Geneva. However, Nef did not really get going in the second run and lost time in every sector. As a result, he dropped eight places.
"It's a bit of a shame, I was in an ideal position after the first run," Nef told SRF. He no longer felt the same willingness to take risks in the second run as he did in the first. "I was at the limit several times in the first run. The main goal in the second run was to finish."
Meillard misses out on a podium hat-trick
Meillard, on the other hand, made up seven places but was still not satisfied with his performance. After finishing second in Val d'Isère and third in Alta Badia, last year's runner-up had his sights set on the podium hat-trick. However, this was already a distant prospect after the first run. The fact that Meillard was still able to move up in the second run was also due to the numerous retirements.
Daniel Yule and Marc Rochat were among the nine racers who did not reach the finish. Rochat in particular, who has never finished in the points in the five races this season, just can't seem to untangle himself. For Yule, who has already won three times in Madonna di Campiglio and counts the slope as one of his favorites, the disappointment was also great.
Hallberg close to a maiden victory
On the other hand, two Frenchmen and a Finn were able to celebrate. Clément Noël celebrated his first victory of the season after two 2nd places. He finished twelve hundredths ahead of Hallberg, who had taken the lead in race 1 with start number 21. Third place went to Paco Rassat, the winner of the Gurgl slalom.
Hallberg had already finished a surprising third at the season opener in Levi and had also recently finished in the top 10 in Alta Badia in eighth place. The 22-year-old has thus established himself as one of the top slalom racers. "It hurts a little that it wasn't quite enough to get to the front," said Hallberg. "Nevertheless, I'm very happy with my performance today." It is now time to learn from the small mistakes.
The technical specialists now travel on to Adelboden. A giant slalom and a slalom are on the program this weekend in the Bernese Oberland.
