Cornelia Hütter wins the downhill in Val d'Isère. The Austrian wins ahead of the German Kira Weidle-Winkelmann and the American Lindsey Vonn. The Swiss women suffer a setback.
Hütter caught Weidle-Winkelmann, who started with bib number 1, by 26 hundredths. Vonn, the leader in the downhill rankings, lost 35 hundredths to Hütter in 3rd place. In a tight race, during which visibility and therefore the run times deteriorated, Ilka Stuhec from Slovenia, Laura Pirovano from Italy and Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic narrowly missed out on the podium. This is Hütter's tenth victory in the World Cup, her fifth in the downhill. The 33-year-old last triumphed in the downhill in Kvitfjell in February.
Sofia Goggia, who was considered the top favorite after the training sessions, missed out on a possible victory with a big mistake in the middle section that cost her a lot of time. The Italian finished in 8th place, 62 hundredths of a second behind.
In the absence of the injured Lara Gut-Behrami, Corinne Suter and Michelle Gisin, the Swiss were, as expected, unable to compete for the top positions. The best athletes in the Swiss-Ski septet were Jasmine Flury and Delia Durrer in 18th place, 1.72 seconds behind. Malorie Blanc (26th) and Joana Hählen (30th) also finished in the points.
