"Progress is progressing. The precision is growing," he wrote on Instagram on Saturday, announcing that he would be back in January.

The eight-time overall World Cup winner, who had been convalescing after a cruciate ligament rupture, had canceled this season, first for Sölden and then also for Levi this weekend. The reason was a three-week viral infection in the fall and the resulting lack of training.

The 36-year-old from Salzburg, who is competing for the Netherlands, only completed his first turns in the snow at the beginning of September, nine months after the injury. According to his team, he currently has 22 training sessions in slalom and giant slalom, which is less than a third of the usual target.
