Mikaela Shiffrin is changing her plans for the World Ski Championships in Saalbach. The American will start in the team competition on Tuesday together with Breezy Johnson and will skip the giant slalom.
Shiffrin explained that she does not feel ready for a giant slalom after her injury. At her home race in Killington at the end of November, she crashed and suffered a stab wound to her abdomen, which required surgery. Shiffrin only returned to the World Cup a week and a half ago at the night slalom in Courchevel, France.
Forgoing the giant slalom opened up new opportunities for Shiffrin, as she announced on social media. The newly crowned downhill world champion Breezy Johnson had asked her if they would like to compete together in the World Championship premiere of the team combination. In the meantime, the American coaches have already informed the duo that they will be competing together.
This closes a circle, said Shiffrin. She and Johnson had been racing together since they were children. They have been friends and sometimes even roommates over the years.
Meanwhile, Lindsey Vonn, who would have loved to race alongside Shiffrin, will form a duo with AJ Hurt.
