Mikaela Shiffrin outshines the competition in the slalom in Sestriere. The US American wins her 100th World Cup race with a lead of over six tenths. Wendy Holdener comes ninth.
Behind Shiffrin, who had already led after the first run, came Croatia's Zrinka Ljutic (0.61 seconds back) and the American Paula Moltzan (0.64).
The then 17-year-old American celebrated her first of an incredible 100 victories in the World Cup on December 20, 2012 in the slalom in Are. This was followed by 62 more triumphs in her specialty discipline. For Shiffrin, the victory in Sestriere was also the 155th World Cup podium finish of her career, equaling the record held by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.
Holdener ninth, zero for Rast
The best Swiss skier was Wendy Holdener in ninth place. The World Championship silver medallist from Schwyz, who has finished second three times and third once in the slalom this World Cup winter, lost 1.25 seconds to the winner.
The slalom world champion and two-time winner of the season Camille Rast was eliminated in the first run in Sestriere. In the discipline rankings, the Valais skier, who suffered a painful bruise on the left side of her body in her fall shortly before the finish, lost her position as leader to Zrinka Ljutic. The Croatian has a 39-point lead over Rast ahead of the last two races.
For Mélanie Meillard, the eighth World Cup slalom of the winter brought the worst result. The 26-year-old from western Switzerland was barely able to train last week due to illness and went into the race with little energy. After seven previous top 10 finishes this season, the result in Piedmont was only 26th place, almost three seconds behind.
Danioth with first points since January 2023
Immediately behind her was Aline Danioth (27th). The 26-year-old from Uri, who had previously only made it to the final in Semmering at the end of December, but was then eliminated, was delighted with her first World Cup points in more than two years. Danioth tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee at the beginning of March 2023, two weeks after her 6th place in the World Championship slalom in Méribel. It was the sixth serious injury for the athlete from Uri and the fourth time the cruciate ligament was affected.
