After the downhill, Marco Odermatt also wins the giant slalom in Beaver Creek. The man from Nidwalden came out on top ahead of the surprising Alex Vinatzer and the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen.
After the first run, Odermatt's lead over the duo Lucas Pinheiro Braathen/Henrik Kristoffersen was 86 hundredths. When he was the last skier in the starting gate at the end of the second run, his lead over the leader Alex Vinatzer was as much as 1.31 seconds. In the end, his comfortable lead dwindled steadily and Odermatt managed to finish 23 hundredths ahead of the surprisingly strong Italian, who moved up from 9th place to 2nd place with the best time on his run and finished on the podium in the giant slalom for the first time in his career. This was completed by Norway's Kristoffersen. It was Odermatt's 49th victory in the World Cup, his 28th in the giant slalom and his fourth win of the current winter.
The Swiss showed a good team performance and all of their racers finished in the top 20. Loïc Meillard showed a slight upward trend. The 29-year-old from western Switzerland, who finished last season so brilliantly and had a disappointing start to the Olympic winter, finished ninth and made it into the top 10 for the first time this season.
Thomas Tumler suffered another setback in the second run. After winning the World Cup for the first time at the same venue last year, the man from Graubünden dropped nine places after a good first run. He finished directly behind Luca Aerni in 14th place. The man from Bern achieved his best result of the season. Lenz Hächler even achieved his best result of his career. The 22-year-old from Zug finished in 19th place and scored points for the first time in his ninth World Cup race.
