Record winner Dominik Paris triumphs for the fourth time in the downhill in Kvitfjell. Behind the Italian, Marco Odermatt and Stefan Rogentin finish on the podium in the replacement race for Garmisch.
Odermatt lost 32 hundredths to Paris in the first of two downhill races in the Norwegian resort, Rogentin 63. World champion Franjo von Allmen and Alexis Monney narrowly missed out on the podium.
Paris made the difference in the middle section, where none of his competitors even came close to the 35-year-old veteran's time. Even at the bottom, no one was faster than the speed specialist, who has now extended his record on the Olympic slopes with four downhill triumphs and is back on top of a World Cup podium for the first time since December 2023.
Following Niels Hintermann's victory last year, Paris prevented another Swiss triumph in Kvitfjell and the sixth Helvetian victory in the eighth race in the supreme discipline this season. Only in Kitzbühel has no Swiss-Ski athlete stood at the top of the downhill podium.
Everything speaks for Odermatt
Marco Odermatt should live well with second place. At his sixth attempt, the man from Nidwalden made it onto the downhill podium for the first time in Kvitfjell. At the same time, he kept Franjo von Allmen, his closest rival in the battle for the downhill globe, at bay. The world champion from the Bernese Oberland lost a lot of time after a mistake in the upper section of the course, which he was unable to make up at the bottom. With two races still to go, Odermatt is 103 points ahead of his team-mate in the downhill rankings.
Odermatt is also taking a big step towards the crystal globe in the overall World Cup. Eight races before the end of the season, his lead over Henrik Kristoffersen is 440 points. The Norwegian technician is only allowed to compete in two giant slaloms and two slaloms, but theoretically also has the opportunity to compete in the speed races.
Rogentin with a premiere
Stefan Rogentin secured his first podium in the supreme discipline. The 30-year-old from Graubünden showed an unspectacular but good run with start number 4 and distanced Von Allmen by two tenths. Rogentin's best downhill result to date was an 8th place, achieved three years ago in Wengen.
Alexis Monney completed another outstanding Swiss result with four racers in the top five positions. Justin Murisier (15th) and Lars Rösti (16th) also finished in the top 20, while Marco Kohler secured two World Cup points in 29th place. For the man from the Bernese Oberland, Saturday is all about qualifying for the World Cup final in Sun Valley.
