Wendy Holdener narrowly misses out on her first podium finish of the Olympic season in the third slalom. The racer from Schwyz comes fourth in Copper Mountain.

Holdener was in second place after the first run and had to let the German Lena Dürr and the Albanian Lara Colturi pass her in the decision. The 32-year-old was 14 hundredths short of her first podium finish of the season in the high-altitude air at over 3000 meters above sea level.

The gap at the top was again considerable, as the third slalom of the Olympic winter was also a sure prey for Mikaela Shiffrin. With a lead of 1.57 seconds, the 30-year-old American triumphed in front of her home crowd with similar superiority as in Levi (1.66 s) and Gurgl (1.23 s), where Colturi, eleven years her junior, came closest. A 25-minute drive from her home in Vail, Shiffrin celebrated her 104th World Cup victory - her 67th in the slalom.

Holdener's good feeling, Shiffrin's comeback

In the first run, Holdener, who started the race with bib number 1, was still "best of the rest" high above Copper Mountain. She was the only one to keep the gap to Shiffrin within limits in the first run at 28 hundredths, her cushion to the rear was a good four tenths. In the second run, a few mistakes crept in right from the start.

The two 4th places in Gurgl and Copper Mountain should nevertheless give Holdener a good feeling for the rest of the season. Shiffrin's return to the technical disciplines at the start of the Olympic winter has paid off to the maximum so far: While last year's discipline winner Zrinka Ljutic was eliminated in the first run, Shiffrin also won the third slalom in a highly superior manner. In addition, the record-breaking woman finished in 4th place in the giant slalom overture in Sölden with bib number 20.

Seven Swiss women in the second run

Camille Rast had to settle for 10th place the day after her convincing 5th place in the giant slalom and a week after her podium finish in Gurgl. Further back, the Swiss women impressed with their breadth. Seven Swiss-Ski athletes made it into the second run. Aline Danioth and Mélanie Meillard finished in 16th and 17th place respectively after impressive second runs, while Eliane Christen was nineteenth after a strong first run (13th) and six lost positions. Nicole Good and Anuk Brändli scored valuable points with 21st and 27th place respectively.

The women's World Cup continues next weekend with two giant slaloms in Tremblant, Canada. The next slalom is scheduled for December 16 in Courchevel.
