Like last year, Camille Rast finishes 3rd in the World Cup slalom in Gurgl, directly ahead of Wendy Holdener. The two Swiss women were only beaten by Mikaela Shiffrin and Lara Colturi.

With another demonstration of power, the American Shiffrin won her 103rd World Cup race by 1.23 seconds ahead of Colturi, who is competing for Albania. Rast lost 1.41 seconds, Holdener a further 18 hundredths.

This is a clear reaction to the defeat a week ago in Levi with places 8 (Holdener) and 15 (Rast). Rast in particular is likely to be relieved after the world champion from Valais had been struggling with hip problems this summer.

After the first run, Holdener and Rast were still in joint 3rd place - and in the end, the top 4 were ranked in exactly the same order as a year ago in Gurgl, when the French-Swiss racer took her first podium place in the World Cup, heralding the winter of her big breakthrough. The Swiss upswing does not come as a complete surprise. The challenging and steeper slope in the Tyrolean Ötztal traditionally suits them better than the piste in the north of Finland.

Anuk Brändli (21st) and Eliane Christen (25th) also scored World Cup points from a Swiss perspective. The 22-year-old from Graubünden had qualified for the second run for the first time ever.

After finishing 22nd in Levi, Mélanie Meillard did not fare well in Gurgl either. She was eliminated in the first run in the upper section. Three other Swiss-Ski racers also failed to finish, three missed the top 30 cut, the closest being Aline Höpli (32nd) by nine hundredths.
