Eleven days after her serious fall, ski star Federica Brignone has published a picture of her badly injured leg. The photo on Instagram shows a huge, long, stitched-up surgical wound that runs from her left thigh past the side of her knee to her lower shin.

"I broke my record for stitches, but I could have done without the last 42," wrote the 34-year-old overall World Cup winner from Italy.

The giant slalom world champion suffered a serious fall at the Italian championships in Val di Fassa on April 3. She suffered multiple fractures of the tibial plateau and the head of the fibula as well as a torn cruciate ligament. Following her operation, she was discharged from hospital in Milan last Tuesday. In the meantime, the Italian has started her rehabilitation program. "I'm already working on getting back to 100 percent," she wrote.

Brignone: First be able to walk again

However, it is unclear when that will be. It all depends on how the physiotherapy goes and how her body reacts. "Step by step. The first thing I'm thinking about is walking again and then everything else will follow," she said. Standing on skis will be impossible for the next four to five months, and only if everything goes well.

This will make it a race against time for Brignone to take part in the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. These begin on February 6, 2026.
