After the World Championships in Saalbach, the Swiss festival continues in the Ski World Cup. Franjo von Allmen wins the downhill in Crans-Montana ahead of Marco Odermatt and Alexis Monney.
No time? blue Sport summarizes for you
- Franjo von Allmen wins the downhill in Crans-Montana ahead of Marco Odermatt and Alexis Monney.
- The best "non-Swiss" is Vincent Kriechmayr in 4th place.
- The last time there was a Swiss triple victory in a World Cup downhill was in Veysonnaz in 1996. Back then, Bruno Kernen came out on top ahead of William Besse and Daniel Mahrer.
Franjo von Allmen showed a similarly wild ride in the first World Cup race after the World Championships as he did two weeks ago in his gold medal run in Saalbach. After his sensational World Championship performances, the 23-year-old from the Bernese Oberland immediately found his way back into competition mode.
After finishing second in Val Gardena, Bormio and Wengen, the downhill world champion is climbing to the next level in this discipline. The Boltiger has previously triumphed once in the World Cup - in the Super-G in Wengen in mid-January.
Odermatt misses out on victory by 0.13 seconds
Marco Odermatt also put in a strong run on the "Piste Nationale", which he had described in the run-up to the race as "the easiest World Cup downhill I've ever skied". The Super-G World Champion, who had narrowly missed out on a medal in Saalbach in the World Championship downhill in fifth place, was 13 hundredths short of his eighth win of the season. The man from Nidwalden has already reached eleven podium places this winter.
The 3rd place of Alexis Monney, who came second in the previous World Cup downhill in Kitzbühel and then third in the World Championships in Saalbach, is also no surprise. The 25-year-old from Freiburg lost 0.42 seconds to winner Von Allmen on his fourth World Cup podium.
Kriechmayr "best of the rest"
Only crumbs remain for the foreign competitors in the downhill in Crans-Montana. The best of the rest is Vincent Kriechmayr. The Austrian veteran, who won World Championship silver behind Von Allmen in Saalbach, has already lost 0.81 seconds to the winner.
In the discipline rankings, Von Allmen has reduced the gap to leader Odermatt by 20 points to 73 points. Monney follows in third place after six of nine runs this winter, although he is already 185 points behind.
Memories of 1987
The last time Switzerland finished first, second and third in a World Cup downhill was in Veysonnaz in 1996, when Bruno Kernen came out on top ahead of William Besse and Daniel Mahrer. In addition, the Swiss downhill skiers have also finished on the podium in Crans-Montana once before: that was in 1987 at the last World Championships in Valais. Back then, Peter Müller triumphed ahead of Pirmin Zurbriggen and Karl Alpiger.
Another race will take place on the Valais high plateau on Sunday with the Super-G (start at 10.30 am). For the men, who last competed in the World Cup in Crans-Montana in 2012, this weekend is the dress rehearsal for the 2027 World Championships.
