Franjo von Allmen celebrates the biggest success of his young career in the World Championship downhill. The man from the Bernese Oberland won ahead of Austria's Vincent Kriechmayr and Alexis Monney from Fribourg.

The Swiss lived up to their role as favorites in the World Championship downhill. In four out of five World Cup races, they had celebrated a double victory in the supreme discipline, and now they were also successful in Saalbach.

Von Allmen like Odermatt

Gold went to Franjo von Allmen. The Simmental native from Boltigen literally exploded this season and came close to his first World Cup victory in the downhill three times as runner-up. Now it was enough for his first triumph in the supreme discipline on the big stage. The 23-year-old did the same as his team-mate and predecessor Marco Odermatt, who also raced to the World Cup title two years ago without a World Cup victory.

Von Allmen was among the fastest in all sectors in his first World Cup downhill and came through without making any mistakes despite taking great risks. In the lower part of the course, he finally managed to close the gap to Kriechmayr and distanced the 2021 World Champion by 24 hundredths.

Bronze went to Alexis Monney and thus to another young Swiss. And this despite the fact that the 25-year-old from Fribourg made a big mistake in his run. Unlike in the super-G, when he dropped out on the podium, he was able to avoid a retirement and only lost a little time. He was seven hundredths behind 2nd place and 14 hundredths behind the surprising Italian Dominik Paris in 4th place.

Odermatt surprisingly far behind

Marco Odermatt follows in 5th place. The defending champion and top favorite was the fastest at the top. In the lower part of the course he was no longer as irresistible as in the Super-G and lost the decisive tenths. In the end, he was 35 hundredths short of bronze and 66 hundredths short of gold. Odermatt missed out on the double of super-G and downhill gold, which Kriechmayr last won four years ago, as well as defending his title, which Bernhard Russi last achieved (1970/1972).

Justin Murisier (1.29 seconds behind) and Stefan Rogentin (1.38) were unable to get involved in the battle for the medals and finished in 8th and 12th place respectively.
