Lindsey Vonn wins the women's downhill in Zauchensee and celebrates her 84th World Cup victory. Janine Schmitt from eastern Switzerland surprises with an exploit and 5th place, Corinne Suter returns solidly.
Only a special off made a race possible in Zauchensee due to the onset of winter - from the third reserve start. And one Swiss skier seized the opportunity. The 25-year-old Janine Schmitt from St. Gallen raced to 5th place with bib number 24, the first time she has finished in the top 15 in her career in the World Cup.
Schmitt, whose best result to date was a 17th place in a super-G in Garmisch last year, was by far the best Swiss racer in the short downhill with a time of just over 66 seconds. Malorie Blanc also put in a solid performance in 13th place.
Corinne Suter also made a successful comeback. The 2021 World Champion and Olympic Champion finished in 22nd place, 1.1 seconds behind. After tearing a muscle fiber in her lower left leg during training, she made her first start of the winter - with bib number 1 on a perfect slope, but not necessarily the fastest conditions. The other Swiss women missed out on the points.
Lindsey Vonn was enthroned at the top, celebrating her 84th World Cup victory, her 45th in the downhill, with an impressive 37 hundredths of a second lead over Norwegian Kajsa Lie. The 41-year-old American finished on the podium for the fourth time in the fourth downhill of the season. This was completed by Vonn's compatriot Jacqueline Wiles. There was less than half a second between second-placed Lie and thirteenth-placed Blanc.
The Austrians experienced a black day at their home race. Cornelia Hütter, the winner of the last downhill in Val d'Isère, was the best in 20th place, Magdalena Egger, the runner-up in St. Moritz, crashed and possibly suffered a serious injury.
