In a tragic accident during a track and field event for high school students in Colorado Springs, a man was fatally hit during a hammer throw competition. The incident occurred on Sunday on the campus of the University of Colorado.

According to reports, the projectile overcame the barrier and hit the man. According to reports, the man was still trying to protect his wife and son. The victim is said to be the father of one of the participants. According to local media, the man was 57 years old.

"We are heartbroken by this terrible accident and are focused on supporting everyone involved," university director Jennifer Sobanet was quoted as saying in a statement.
