Rüegg, overall winner of the Tour Down Under in January, won the sprint from Marin to Salvaterra de Miño in the north-west of the country after 114 km of racing, ahead of the two-time Belgian road world champion Lotte Kopecky and the German Franziska Koch. She will therefore start the second of seven stages on Monday in the overall leader's jersey.

Petra Stiasny, the second Swiss rider in the 108-strong field, crossed the finish line in 89th place, more than two minutes behind the leader.
