The Swiss women around skip Corrie Hürlimann have passed their major event premiere with flying colors. They defeated the Swedes 10:5 in their opening game at the European Curling Championships in Lohja, Finland. The decision was made in the seventh end when the Swedes made too many mistakes and allowed the Zug team to make five.
In the second game of the evening, Celine Schwizgebel, Stefanie Berset, Marina Loertscher and Corrie Hürlimann managed to confirm their successful start against Italy. After a tight start, the Swiss women took a decisive 6:4 lead in the ninth end and ultimately won the game against the Italians 8:4.
Like the women, the men around skip Yannick Schwaller also started the European Championships with a win against Sweden. The decisive factor was the ninth end, in which the team extended their lead from 6:4 to 8:4 and thus secured victory. In contrast to the women, Schwaller, Pablo Lachat-Couchepin, Sven Michel and Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel will not be back in action until Sunday against Germany and Poland.
