The last play-off semi-finalist in the Handball NLA is Suhr Aarau. The team from Aargau won the decisive fifth quarter-final against GC Amicitia after two overtime periods in a seven-meter shoot-out.
After the bitter defeat after two overtime periods on Tuesday, when they failed to seal the deal at home, HSC Suhr Aarau can celebrate after all. Goalkeeper Jannis Scheidiger became the big hero with three saves in the seven-meter shoot-out.
Three times in this dramatic Game 7 of the quarter-finals, one of the two teams looked like the sure winner. In the final seconds of regulation time, the team from Aargau had the chance to win 21:20. But they equalized in the final second of the first overtime with a penalty from Nikos Sarlos. And two seconds before the end of the second overtime, GC Amicitia had the ball, lost it and Daniel Parkhomenko equalized to make it 29:29.
On Tuesday, 80 minutes had been enough, but this time a penalty shoot-out was also needed. The Zurich side had to do without its two best shooters, Martin Popovski and Janus Lapajne, following exclusions - with bitter consequences. GC Amicitia lost two of its three home games in the best-of-five series, while Suhr Aarau is back in the semi-finals for the first time after failing three times in the quarter-finals and prevented the top four qualifiers from reaching the last four.
Kriens-Lucerne will face BSV Bern on Easter Saturday, while Kadetten Schaffhausen will play Suhr Aarau on Monday.
