Just like a year ago, the cross-country skiing winter begins with a victory for Frida Karlsson. The Swede won the 10 km race in the classic technique with individual start at the World Cup opener in Ruka.

Karlsson won in the north of Finland a good ten seconds ahead of Norway's Heidi Weng, who prevented a Swedish one-two-three. She was followed by two of Karlsson's compatriots, Moa Ilar and Ebba Andersson. Jessie Diggins, the American overall World Cup winner of the last two winters, started her farewell season with a 5th place.

The Swiss team leader Nadine Fähndrich did not compete. The Lucerne native is concentrating on Saturday's sprint. The World Championship bronze medallist finished second in the overall sprint standings last season, as she did in 2021 and 2023.

Nadja Kälin achieved the best result of the four Swiss women who started, finishing 16th, just over a minute off the lead. With Anja Weber (20th) and Giuliana Werro (30th), two other Swiss women finished in the top 30.

Valerio Grond achieved the best result for Switzerland in the men's race. The all-rounder from Graubünden finished 19th, less than 45 seconds behind the winner Martin Nyenget. The Norwegian relegated his compatriot Johannes Hösflot Klaebo to second place by 2.1 seconds. The podium was completed by the surprising Austrian Mika Vermeulen.
